Flagler Art Faculty in Naples Museum of Art exhibition

Two of Flagler’s art faculty members are part of a new Naples Museum of Art exhibit called “Florida Contemporary” that brings together 50 of the state’s photographers and painters.

Associate Professor Patrick Moser and Assistant Professor Sara Pedigo, both painters, were picked for the exhibition that showcases the rich variety of artists living and working in the state from realism to abstraction. The museum calls the show “an overview of the innovative images, subject matter and mediums that characterize the work being created in the state today.”

Jud Damon named athletic director

As teams get ready to begin play in the Peach Belt Conference, Flagler College has hired Jud Damon as its new athletic director. Damon had been athletic director at Georgia College and State University.

Damon has spent the last year at Georgia College in Milledgeville, and he served in the same capacity at the Savannah College of Art and Design from 2000-2008. He also served as the athletic director and head baseball coach at Trinity International University in Miami from 1997-2000.

Flagler joins Peach Belt Conference

It’s been three years in the making, but Flagler College finally has a conference for its athletic teams to call home. In December, the Peach Belt Conference announced that Flagler and the University of Montevallo had been accepted for membership in the league, which now totals 13 colleges and universities.

“I am thrilled that our college has been accepted for membership in the Peach Belt Conference, a well-established athletic conference with a solid record of competitive athletic programs at its member institutions,” said Flagler President Dr. William T. Abare Jr. “We are eager to compete against some of the top NCAA Division II programs in the nation.”

‘04 Alumnus helps organization deliver soccer balls, jerseys and equipment to Central America

Caleb Cooper, a 2004 alumnus and former soccer player, has been working with an organization called Peace Passers that donates sports equipment to needy nations. Cooper wrote this piece about his trip last year to Central America to deliver soccer equipment.

Flagler launches ‘Ignite’ freshmen learning communities

Flagler is making some big changes to its freshmen experience. This fall, the college held its first classes for a new initiative to enhance student engagement. The program, called “Ignite,” creates first-year learning communities by placing students in the same classes and giving them a variety of unique experiences together.

As more Americans struggle with the current recession, Flagler College students have started working with a Jacksonville TV station’s consumer advocate to share money-saving solutions with viewers.

Gargoyle awarded

The Gargoyle, Flagler’s student newspaper, won three awards from the Florida College Press Association’s (FCPA) 2007 Better Newspaper Contest. The Gargoyle took first place for “Best Front Page Design,” second for “Best Feature Writing” and third for “Best College Newspaper.”

40th Anniversary
It began 40 years ago with a plan that must have seemed a bit crazy to some: Take a former luxury hotel that had seen better days and convert it to an all-women’s liberal arts college in the heart of the Nation’s Oldest City.
